Godzilla’s death scene in 1998’s Godzilla struck me unexpectedly hard, especially the part where the light faded out of his/her eyes. I wasn’t expecting myself to be bawling my eyes out at a public venue, at least not during the middle of an action blockbuster.
I felt that in this monster movie, there was a reversal of roles. Godzilla was the victim and us humans were the monsters. Godzilla was a by-product of our bad decisions (nuclear testing) and was simply doing what came naturally to him/her; procreation and protecting his/her young. Perhaps choosing to nest in Madison Square Garden was a bad idea, but what does a giant lizard know about geography and urban planning?
